There is at least one third-party add-in that does this. You can also export as a video and then convert the video to an animated gif using an online converter.

I create training materials. I have a macro that exports slides as static jpg files and the macro writes a text file that is saved as a .html web page. When the .html file is opened it shows each slide with the slide notes to the right of each slide.

If I could save the slides as .gif files then my macro would be creating web pages that are alive.

PowerPoint makes great animations. What can't we save a slide as an animated gif?

I can save an animated slide as a movie and then use Snagit to convert the movie to a gif but PowerPoint should be able to do all of that.

We can't create an animated GIF from animated slides but at YOUpresent, we are about to release a PPT2GIFa add-in that is designed to help you make animated GIF images from PowerPoint. This is not the same design need as the request in this question so we vote for Microsoft to add this too. You can get the free add-in here : http://youpresent.co.uk/free-stuff/free-ppt2gif-converter/

With the move to Yammer, having slides shows integrated into it via an Animated GIF would be really useful
