Ability to customize textbox shape
This will allow a user to wrap a text box around an image or other object.
I frequently want in image in a "corner" of a text box, and have the text wrap around like an "L" around the image. The only way to accomplish this is to put tabs/spaces on the line.

Agree, the suggestion from MSFT does not work in the sense that you can change the shape yes, but the text does not fill the shape.
My suggestion would be to by default give the shape 2 extra grab points per side at the midpoints between a corner and a center grab point. The grab point could be a different color/shape then the main grab points to distinguish them. Dragging these new grab points would indent the default text box. Right clicking would give a menu for straight or curved lines. -

The suggested idea from the MSFT Product does work. It allows you to change the "shape" of a shape but it doesnt cause the text layout to change. If I make an L shape, the textbox doesnt change so the text flows outside the shape

You can currently do this in PowerPoint. Simply insert your text box, add some text, then in the Format ribbon, in the Insert Shapes section select Edit Shape. From there choose Edit Points, your shape, in this case textbox, is now editable. If you want to make more granular changes you can right click on the textbox while in the edit mode and choose options such as add or remove points.
