Yes, it would be good if we could do this easily.
There is a hack if you're interested. If you don't use the notes pages, you could add lines to the notes master and then print notespages instead of handouts.

For those of you as frustrated with this as I am, best practice is to get into the habit of turning off footers (using Insert | Header and Footer) before copying slides into a new deck. I know there are way more issues than this will fix, but it helps a bit.
Also see https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_powerpoint-mso_other/why-cant-i-get-my-slide-numbers-to-show/d667be45-c003-430b-b1dc-ac5902965792 for some additional ideas.

Is this still the case? I thought we finally got that fixed after PPT 2010?

I agree! I was trying to get this setting to work just this week. If you're asking for this, I now know I can stop looking for it.

I agree. I HATE this. It makes close work extremely difficult.

Just to be clear here, there is an option to auto-reverse (which is not ticked by default) that you can access on the Animations pane. It would be nice if this option were available in the Effect Options dropdown.

?? Which version of PowerPoint are you using? Content no longer distorts when you resize slides in PPT 2013 and 2016 (Office 365).
@Suneel Shivdasani, make sure to look at the View tab, Grayscale or Black and White settings. You can do exactly what you're asking there. Then when you print, be sure to select Grayscale or Black and White.
