This is a huge problem for anyone needing to provide handouts to students or meeting attendees.

It is a memory management bug in the export to handouts function.

There is a support page at https://support.office.com/en-us/article/edit-or-print-powerpoint-handouts-in-word-09256fc0-3b3e-4a43-9c83-3cfde594fed4 that provides some lame workarounds that can be used but these can take hours of manual work vs. the minutes of automated work that was required before this broke.

This is a memory management bug in the export to handouts function.

This has been unfixed for a few years now. I would be happy to work with someone in Microsoft on recreating and documenting this bug so it can be sent to the right team backlog as a high priority.

    Please fix it.

The biggest problem is that handout exports have become unstable in recent versions. There is a Microsoft support page at https://support.office.com/en-us/article/edit-or-print-powerpoint-handouts-in-word-09256fc0-3b3e-4a43-9c83-3cfde594fed4 that acknowledges this and suggests a set of extremely lame workarounds that turn an automated one-minute task into a manual task that can take half an hour. PLEASE FIX THE BUG!!!!!

This is part of a larger problem: Creating handouts / exporting from PowerPoint is very poorly implemented. For those of us who do training based on powerpoint the functionality is pretty lame, and the addition in recent versions of a memory related bug that caused export of handouts to crash all the time sure doesn't help.

All of this is a good idea, and all the points made are valid for me as well

I think the main point is that the handout master used to be pretty inflexible but worked well. Now it is still inflexible and also crashes all the time. Needs a serious re-think.
