Microsoft began making applications for folks who didn't expect much. If it worked (on an Intel 8080 PC) and had most of the features users needed, that was good enough. Incremental improvements followed, but the "good enough" amateur character persisted (e. g., try using Word for anything). Contrast this with Adobe, a company which could have gone the same way but was committed to a higher standard. After 30 years, it makes a difference. Now MS is putting its development into its cloud business, not the Office products. Only Excel meets a professional standard.
